Q: Does my cat have enough protein in her diet?
A: Protein is an important component in a cat’s diet but a lot of pet owners are under the misconception that more is better. A high protein diet can increase the risk of dehydration as well as ammonia and urea which are by-products of protein metabolism. Also note that excess protein can overburden the liver or kidneys. This has been documented to be the cause of kidney failure in mature cats. While protein is good, a good balance is necessary to maintain optimum health for your cat. Make sure the protein in your cat’s food is digestible protein. Beware of protein processed from dangerous sources such as melamine, which is highly poisonous for our pets.
