A senior Iranian cleric has decreed dogs are “unclean” and should not be kept as pets in a move aimed at discouraging western-style dog ownership in the Islamic state, a newspaper reported Saturday. Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi has sent a clear message to his people with a fatwa ruling that this trend must stop.

Farm owner and property developer, Roland Adam decided to bring it home for fear that wild foxes might make it their next meal. Starved and shivering, the piglet, christened Paulinchen, was brought back to Roland’s farm.

Life's a Bitch

Pet groomer Sun Hu was jailed two weeks for using a clipper to hit a dog last month. The three-year-old Maltese terrier died of head injuries while still on the grooming table. A post-mortem by the Veterinary Pathology Branch of the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) revealed that the dog had been hit on the head. The maximum punishment is a $10,000 fine and a year in jail.
