What you need: A dehydrator, knife, and chopping board
When it comes to ensuring your treats are free from nasty additives, there’s no easier way than to make them yourself. We chose chicken breast as our ingredient of choice, but for this snack, you can opt for other meats, fruits, or vegetables.
1) While semi-frozen, slice the meat into strips that are 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. The thinner the slice, the quicker it dries. Meat is oily and takes around six to 12 hours, while fruits and vegetables take just three to six hours.
2) Lay the slices on your dehydrator tray. Set the timer and heat to 120 to 150 degrees Celsius to kill harmful pathogens. When they are fully dried, the pieces will be the same colour throughout when sliced. Remove and store in an air-tight container.
JAZZY JAR LIDS
What you need: Figurines, mason jars, super glue, spray paint
Mason jars look pretty hipster by default, but you can take it a step further by customising the lids with some old school animal toys.
1) Apply super glue on the legs of the toys and stick them to the centre of the jar lid. Apply pressure and hold in place for two minutes. To avoid making a mess, wear gloves and lay the table with newspaper.
2) In a well-ventilated area, spray paint the jar lids. If one layer of paint doesn't cover the original hue of the lid and toy, allow it to dry before spraying another coat of paint. Once completely dry, you can transfer your treats into the jar and voila—your hipster dog treats are ready!
