OLYMPUS PEN E-PL8 (Available at the Olympus online store (www.shopatolympus.com.sg) and all authorised retailers.)
• Price: From $898
• Weighs 467g (with kit lens)
• 16.1 megapixels
• Interchangeable lens
Test: Albeit heavy, the E-PL8 feels solid and sturdy, and has an ergonomic grip. Its photos came out the best—impressively sharp and vivid, both indoors and outdoors. The continuous shooting function was extra helpful for our fidgety furkids.
Verdict: The E-PL8 is the priciest, but it could be a worthy investment if you want to go semi-pro in future. Plus, it looks really good. The brushed aluminum body and the leather grain details lend it a super chic, luxe look. (Score: 4.5/5)
CANON POWERSHOT G7X MARK II (Available at the Canon E-shop (www. shop.canon.com.sg) and all authorised retailers.)
• Price: $799
• Weighs 319g
• 20.1 megapixels
• Wide aperture
Test: According to Canon, the G7X Mark II takes near-DSLR quality photos. That's a bold claim, but we’re pleased to share that this camera really did deliver. It came out tops in our road test: The photos were stunning, and we loved the auto white balance feature. It was also easy to catch stylish macro shots with a bokeh effect.
Verdict: Lightweight and yet packing a punch, the G7X Mark II sounds like the perfect camera. And it almost is—our only gripe is the comparatively poor battery life, but that can be easily solved with a spare battery. (Score: 4.5/5)
