Feeding your furkid a premium dog food should cover all his nutritional needs, for the most part.

However, some pooches are genetically predisposed to certain health conditions or may be consuming home-cooked meals that do not provide all the nutrients his body requires to function optimally.

In such cases, adding a supplement (or several) can do wonders for his health and wellness. Picking the right ones for your pup doesn’t have to be a mind-boggling exercise. Here are our top picks and what they do for your pooch. Make sure to run these by your veterinarian first!

SKIN – Flaxseed oil

Our pick: Vets All Natural Flaxseed Oil. Available at www.petloverscentre.com.

Also known as linseed oil, flaxseed oil is obtained from the dried, ripened seeds of the flax plant. It’s an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, helps keep Fido’s coat in top condition, and also alleviates joint pains and skin diseases. As a liquid, it is best included into wet or canned food in small volumes. However, don’t feed this to Puss! “Its primary molecular form is linolenic acid, which is much harder for cats to break down,” shares Dr Bruce Syme.

NERVOUS SYSTEM/BRAIN – Krill oil

Our pick: Healthy Origins Krill Oil Natural Vanilla Flavor. Available at sg.iherb.com

At the centre of the nervous system lies the brain, which comprises almost 60 percent fatty acid. Omega-3 fatty acids, which directly feed the brain’s nerve fibres, can be extracted from both plants and marine life—of which the latter is better absorbed by the brain.

Fed orally, krill oil acts as a safer alternative when compared to other fish-derived omega-3 oils. “It doesn’t carry the risk of elevated mercury levels,” says Dr Paul Mitchell from the Animal Recovery Referral Centre.
